Every fall the same question comes up from snowbirds heading south, weekenders winterizing their rigs, and drivers on late-season trips: "The dump station I always use is closed. Where do I go now?" Here's what the official sources actually say, and how to avoid pulling into a locked dump.

What closes in winter (and why)

How to check before you drive

  1. Use the state DOT's own rest area page, not last year's app review. If the state publishes a live status (Washington does), trust that over a map pin. If it publishes only a list (Oregon), call ahead. Oregon's page links to the Oregon State Parks status page to confirm current park facilities.
  2. Check the park's own page or call. State park pages often post end-of-season dates and a phone number. Keyhole, for example, says "Call 307-756-3596 to check current availability."
  3. Check the truck stop location page or app. Pilot Flying J lists RV dump stations among its RV services (Pilot RV Services) and Love's lists dump stations among its RV amenities (Love's), but not every location has one. Filter by location before you exit. More in our truck stop dump station guide.
  4. Look at the interstate pages here. Our I-5 Washington page shows each station with a last-verified date and its official source.

Where else to dump when your usual spot is closed

These are places RVers commonly use off-season. Availability, fees and rules are set locally, so call first:

Never dump onto the ground, into the street, or into a storm drain. It's illegal in many places. For example, the City of Oakland, California says its municipal code, Alameda County regulation, and California state law "prohibit pollutant discharge to the street, gutter, or storm drain system," and that dump stations and mobile pump-outs are the legal way to dispose of RV wastewater (City of Oakland). Check your own city's rules.

FAQ

Do rest area dump stations close in winter? Some do. Washington tracks dump stations "Closed During Winter" separately, and Oregon lists at least one rest stop dump station as open March through November. Check the state DOT's page for your route.

Is the dump station open if the rest area is open? Not necessarily. Washington lists the two statuses separately, and a rest area can be open with its dump station closed.

Will there be water to rinse my hose? Don't count on it in cold months. Bring your own.

What does it cost to dump at a truck stop? The chains don't publish one national price. Ask at the location; Pilot advertises discounted dumping fees for linked Good Sam members.
